Finding an Organizer

How do I pick an organizer with the specialties I need?

Some organizers are generalists; others specialize. Some specialize in paper management, others in kitchens or closets, some in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Many organizers have more than one specialty.

Our local Washington, DC Metro Chapter includes experts in many specialties. The members’ database lists the specialties of each of our members. Click here to search the database now.

What if I want to find a veteran organizer with a lot of experience?

When using our find an organizer system look for the year the NAPO-WDC Member started organizing, the Golden Circle (GC) logo or the Certified Professional Organizers (CPO®) logo.

Who would be the best organizer for someone with ADD/ADHD?

If you have a specific need for an organizer who works with clients who have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or who are chronically disorganized, (CD) look for the appropriate abbreviations among the specialties listed.

I’m organized. I want to work for an organizer.

Most organizers run sole practitioner businesses and do not hire employees. A few do hire employees or use occasional sub-contractors. Look for the code EMP in our members’ database.

What should I think about before calling for help?

To determine what is right for you and your situation, ask yourself these questions. You may not know the answers yet, but organizers you contact can help you determine the answers –

  • If organizing is a means to an end, what is the end I want to reach?
  • What areas are causing the biggest obstacles in the way of my goals?
  • Is the disorganization chronic – you try, but standard systems don’t work for you?
  • Or is the lack of order unusual – due to a life-changing event?
  • Is most of the problem due to things that are two-dimensional — papers, magazines and books?
  • Or, is it three-dimensional things – clothes, toys, videos, kitchen gear, etc.
  • Do I need overall space planning and a storage layout structure plan first?
  • Do I need hands-on help working through every step of the process?
  • Do I need ongoing telephone coaching for time management or for ADD?
